Got some great tips from Harry Sandler the past few days on tinkering with my image...so I decided to post the results on the blog today. What I am learning is play play play. It really is the same as any other art medium when it comes to "brush time". The love you take is equal to the love you make, so to speak...thanks John Lennon

Last evening I was eagerly reading tips from our student site from my laptop, iPad on the keys of said laptop, texting my daughter on my trusty iPhone..laying on the other side of my keyboard. My Husband asks, "Are you really using all of those at the same time????"

Whatever it is...I am having a wonderful time creating art with these tools that I am only just beginning to understand...and I am having so much fun...

This weekend we had an amazing workshop- iPhone -Antics with Harry Sandler. It was so much fun...and I am so inspired. I do look forward to creating everyday, even if sometimes I do not get a chance to...but now I have the tools to do it on the fly!

Mom's poinsettia brooch. It is maybe 45 or 50 years old, and probably from the five and dime...a magical place at this time of year to a little girl...some of you may have never heard of the five and dime, but that is another conversation. I remember looking at this in and amongst all of the wonderful "jewels" in Mom's jewelry box, as a special treat every now and then. A treasure trove of vintage buttons, costume jewelry, a mustard seed...and the occasional rhinestone. What fun it was then...and still now today as I remember her every time I wear it during the Holiday Season.

Happy Holidays to all of my family and friends near and far...you are so special to me, and so much in my thoughts at this special time of year.

My Elegant Chair

My Chair...my beautiful chair. I found this wonderful chair about 12 years ago. I sanded and painted and sanded some more. I glazed and sealed with a clear coat that enables all of the layers to actually show the depth of the tomato red paint and dark chocolate brown glazing. This week, my elegant chair will be going to its new forever home...and I must say that I am sad to be letting it go. For years this has been the chair that kinda makes a girl feel pretty just sitting in it. I do wish my chair the best on its journey to the northwest, and I will once again be on the lookout for the graceful lines that seem to complete the thoughts that run through my heart and the need to give something a new beginning. Happy trails.......

It has been almost a year since I have started my blog, and so many things have happened in that amount of time. I really wanted to post something daily, but somehow life got in the way... it seems John Lennon was correct :o) What an amazing year!

On a side note, I have been doing a series of little paintings for the gallery walk on december 11th, and I seem to still be in a nesting mode...this one is very soft and subtle...

This is the new poster design for the Exhibition that will be in my gallery. I hope you will have time to come and see the exceptional works by Harry Sandler of New York, and Barbara Ventura of Miami...it promises to be a fabulous show!

I have been so busy there has been almost no time for posting...I have been designing cards and posters and ads for shows and magazines for the new location for the gallery. I finally have a little studio area set up right behind the entry, and hope to finish a very important piece for an up-coming show that my work will be in. More about this later...

I love being surrounded by works of artists I have always admired, and I am so inspired to get back to creating some work of my own...so little time...so many ideas...stay tuned!

My Artisan page is now up on the Carmel Arts & Design Districts website! I really love my new location, just as much as I love my studio downtown at The Stutz! I am covered in paint, just the same as I am when at the stutz...this seems to happen at both places, I need to learn why that keeps happening... Today I am working on a set of dining room chairs and table for a fabulous client. I love the fabric we selected, and the metamorphosis is so much fun to watch...I will show them once they are finished...

'A lot of things have happened since the last time we spoke...some of them are funny, some of 'em ain't no joke... I trust you will forgive me if I lay it on the line...I always thought you were a friend of mine'.

Never throw something beautiful away...

'Current In Carmel' is one of the weekly publications for the area, and included are stories for all of the north side. I was out of town last week (more about this later:o), and I came home to learn that the gifted Artist, Designer and Entrepreneur, Vicky Early had written about one of my works. How exciting! I am working n a series of Ladies in the mirror, and so far there are three. The original Lady In The Mirror will soon reside in her new home in New York. Queen Of Hearts, shown above, is considering a move to Louisville and can be seen in my gallery along with Earth Beauty, third in the series. I love the title that was chosen for the feature, it has so many meanings...to me anyway. I also love that she thought enough of my work to write about it...Thanks Vicky!

I have completed a new work in the Lady In The Mirror series. This is the first art that I have worked on in my atelier in the arts district. I spent most of the day at the Stutz yesterday, and today back in Carmel. Still getting used to the back and forth, but I love them both so this is the way it goes...I am very happy that things have settled enough for me to get some work done. Yay! More to come...

I am thrilled to announce that I now have the best of both worlds! A working Studio in the historic Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis, and a Fine Art Gallery in the Arts District in downtown Carmel.

The new location will enable me to show my hand painted works and wallcoverings, pique assiette pieces, paintings, and decorative painting. I have many plans for this location, including assisting the regional design trade in locating and bringing more original art to the distinctive homes they represent.

I will continue working on projects in my beautiful studio at the Stutz, including quite a few new plans there as well! I have to say that I need to pinch myself to make sure this is not just a dream!

Fireplace Rescue

The call came in for a make over on a fireplace in a home that has a european old world aesthetic. Unfortunately, the granite salesman sold a contemporary-ish idea to my trusting client. So many things could have been done with the stone to accomplish the desired result...alas!

My first thought was to start over...this idea did not go over very well needless to say. The next thought was to add the corbels to anchor the floating mantle. The hand painted limestone finish on the corbels and mantle gives a more believable look. Next step was to glaze all existing stone to neutralize the impact of the keystone, and darken the arch to give visual height to the low firebox.

It must have been fireplace repair week...

A quest for a match

I got a call from a kind couple that had water damage on the wall of their fireplace. The walls had a faux finish in dark green, and they could not locate the original artist, as she had moved from the area. When I arrived to have a look at the repair to be done, the wall above the mantle was newly patched drywall in its chalky white glory. All they had was a small amount of the base coat for me to go on.

This is the point where I begin to feel like a mad scientist of color or a detective of sheen on a quest...how close a match can I get for the base coat, what was the color and product used for the layers on top...was it paint? Could it have been glaze? oil? latex? (gasp!) acrylic??? What was the method of application? brush? sponge? (double gasp!!) rag? polyester (triple gasp!!!) cotton? plastic? What was the sealer? oil? acrylic? satin...semi? interior? exterior???

You get the idea...The original finish was done 9 years ago...so any of these could have been possible answers. I personally had not done a finish of this variety for 20 years or longer. I believe I could pull a blurry photo of dusty blue one out of the archives. But I won't :o)

The lighter spots you see are my choice of topcoat, still wet so they caught the flash...I think in one more layer, I will have it...

I have been so busy the past few weeks, working on several things...some of them big...some of them small...this one is somewhere in between. A yummy decorative finish in a central hallway in the home of one of my clients. These walls have a velvety chocolate mousse base coat with hand painted watercolor stripes...all done while listening to Jackson Browne. I love the depth of the stripes on all of these angled walls. I learned again how much I really enjoy getting lost in something as simple as this...a brush in the hand and a song in the heart.

'And when the morning light comes streaming in...I'll get up and do it again.

Clouds & Something for Karen

I love clouds. People ask why are you taking more photos of clouds...why are you always looking at the sky? Some just shake their heads at my inability to realize that all clouds are the same...I keep on shooting.

I find clouds soothing...no matter if they are happy little clouds or the kind of clouds you might see just before you run for the cellar*...they speak to me on a very deep level, in many different ways...as different as each ones beauty exists to be seen. I really do not think I can explain why...words seem to fail me. I am just happy to have learned this about myself.

Clouds make a difference to me on a daily basis. Especially when I am thoughtful about a thing or two...or three. Someday, when I am ready...I will start painting them.

This shot is for Karen, a very good friend and exceptional Mixed Media Artist that has done a series with towers in the sky. It found me when I stopped for a light...

While talking to a friend the other day, I was reminded of a wall finish I had done over 11 years ago in a formal dining room. When asked if I remembered these golden walls, I found that I was quite humbled and amazed that my work had made that much of an impression on another person...enough for them to remember it all of these years later. A Fairy Tale Castle...

From the Archives: A two story Entry in a 90 year old Tudor style home. The old plaster walls had an original limestone block imprint that had been painted over for years. The Home Owner wanted soft faded limestone blocks painted individually on each imprint. One by one each was painted with translucent grays, umbers, sienna, sepia tones and a tiny touch of rose.

The scroll motif was painted in my studio on canvas and hung on the ceiling in between the layered and roped beams. I really loved working on this one, it was like working on a castle in a fairy tale...

You may say I'm a dreamer...but I'm not the only one...

BirdyBoo Necklace & Earrings & Art Fair Finds

This charmed necklace is dripping with vintage and antique glass cabachons, beads, turquoise, blown glass and reproduction findings. Many oval/egg shaped beads bring to mind the sound of birds singing on a warm spring morning. Birds, bees, feathers, baskets, flowers and butterflies complete this vintage look. Perfect with a simple blouse and a favorite jean jacket...simply charming!

As I mentioned before, I had volunteered to work at our Stutz Artist Association booth at the Broad Ripple Art Fair. While there, several people mentioned how nice it was to see Art from the Stutz at the Decorators' Show House. I loved hearing this...feedback is always nice...especially this soon after the event.

I must show you the beautiful vase I found today while at the Fair. This figurative ceramic vase was made by Kimberly Anderson from Hartford City, Indiana.

Isn't she graceful and beautiful???

I look forward to finding some white stock, or other vintage style fragrant flowers for her. Hydrangea would be perfect... I think she is just beautiful. Maybe she will hold my paint brushes...how fitting!

what will I find tomorrow...hopefully a way to eat kettle corn without dropping some down my shirt...

A Nautical Floor & an Art Fair!

A hand painted floor, this time with a rope border and compass stars. I really love painting hardwood floors, but please do not ask my knees how they feel about this... This floor was sanded down to raw wood , the pattern was drawn and then painted with wood tone glaze. Three coats of polyurethane to protect, and 12 years later still in great shape.

Today I finished repairs from where the artwork was hung on my hand painted wall covering at the Show house...all went very well...Thanks to the Franklin Brothers, the best installers in this region. A little touch up by me...and viola!

I wish that my photos could show you the pattern and depth of the finish.

Back in February, carefully rolled and numbered for the Franklin Brothers....I just love them!

And in January, on the studio walls...

I find out Tuesday if the Home Owners will be keeping my creation in the Booth Tarkington home. It is my hope that they will, and have many happy years with a memory of our little stroll...

Feels kinda funny seeing the house so empty so fast...echoing with only a memory of the recent activity. Surreal. The echo will soon be replaced by the happy sounds of a family back home in Indiana.

Show House Stats

As the 2010 St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators Show House draws to a close, new information makes itself available to us. More than 10,000 patrons came through the Booth Tarkington home from April 24th to May 9th, Mothers Day. We handed out over 4,800 cards to patrons...not a bad average.

Thats 4,800 cards times 11 Artists...

So many good contacts were made for all of the Artists involved, and all of the Artists at the Stutz. I am so grateful for all of the hard work put forth by all of these exceptional Artists...to help make this project a success. You have all inspired me so much. My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you...

Mothers Day at Show House!

A long standing tradition at St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House is the Mother's Day celebration. By this I mean bringing Mom to the Show House, especially on Mother's Day proper, is how so many people in our region celebrate their own Mothers. Grandmothers...Aunts...Sisters...and Babies too.

It is really amazing to watch...I would say a thousand plus patrons go through the finished home on this special day. Mothers and Daughters. Mothers and Sons. Maybe their eyes give it away, maybe it is their smile or freckles or spirit or laugh...maybe it is the way a Son lovingly leads his Mother step by step all the way through this huge and beautiful home. The ties that bind and the love that bonds...

A touching and lovely and revealing thing to observe on this day of days at the Show House.

Today, as I stood in my design area... I thought of my Mother, and all that she had taught me, and how much I missed her beautiful smile...and how she had influenced my life...

After hearing so many comments this past week about my Pique Assiette mirror and table, I also thought of how many years I have used the checkerboard pattern in my work from time to time. It is not something that I get up in the morning every day and think about...but it does seem to creep into my designs from time to time. After thinking about it, I realized I had been using it for many years. I tried to think of how it must have started...

I then thought of the gingham dress that my Mother made for me all those years ago...

Vintage Denim Embellishment...thoughts of the day

As Promised, today I am posting a photo of a vintage jean jacket that I have painted and embellished. A flowing damask pattern done in metallic old gold covers the bodice of the garment. Hand beaded ab crystals catch the light just so...without being too flashy :o) Vintage reproduction findings include Napoleon Bumblebees standing guard on the collar points and love bird filagrees adorning the cuffs. As I look at this design I feel there is an addition that is needed to complete the look that I want to achieve... I guess sometimes just writing about something helps to work out the final details...helping us to learn...even from ourselves.

Funny the things we learn along the way, whether we teach ourselves or learn from others...all of the things we learn help to shape out lives. So much of the knowledge is wanted and needed and comes at just the right time, very organic...I love it when this happens. Other times we learn something that we might rather not know...but it still becomes a part of the process of growing and learning and trusting...and in the end who we are. Another reason for posting something blue today...

I love to learn and it is my life plan to continue along this path where ever it takes me. My wish for all of us is to always at some point, be able to locate a soft place to land...when we need it the most.

I am off to the Show House to gush a bit about my favorite artists...it is a good day after all...

Above is one of the exceptional works created by Fine Art Photographer Harry Sandler, "Where Are They" from Sandler's Childhood And Other Neighborhoods series. One of the first works you will see upon entering my design area. I have had so much fun showing our "Walk With Penrod" to the patrons of the 49th Annual St.Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House, and the feedback has been fantastic!

Blue Willow Bracelet

One of my vintage style cuff bracelets designs, this time with a deep blue shard of vintage Blue Willow China. Nepolean Bumble Bees flank the setting of cobalt blue, along with ab crystals to capture the light. All done on a filigree cuff. A perfect accompaniment to that hand painted jean jacket, don't you think?

A Rosebud Of A Chair & thoughts of the day...

Actually a pair. This is a close up of one of the chairs from my Frog and Lady Bug set, that I mentioned a while ago. I recently got to visit my rescued old chairs and could not resist trying to get a better photo for my...er...records :o) In the seat this time is the flumpy pillow my workroom made for the owner.

The pillow matches the back of the chair...

My favorite part of this little chair, is the rose and bud laying across the top. This photo also shows the tiny stripe I used for the welting...what fun!

I have been getting ready for so many different events lately that I am really looking forward to getting back to my well worn brush and broken bits of treasured past. Once the Show House closes and the studio readies for the next project I will settle into a few projects that I have been looking forward to for a long time. To follow ones passion is not always the easiest thing to do...so many ideas, so little time...

A Sweet Surprise

A funny thing happened on my way to Show House & Open House preparations this year. I was asked to submit a list of Five Things I Love to the Indy Star. It was not hard to pick some of my favorites, but I must admit number five I had only tried once, at my Sisters wedding. The margarita cupcake from Holy Cow Cupcakes in Carmel. Yum!

Less than one week later, someone was tapping on my studio door. As I walked around the corner I noticed a tall man with a little hot pink box in his hands.

Good Weekend at the Show House

I spent some time at the St. Margaret's Hospital Guilds Decorators' Show House this weekend people watching, and greeting and welcoming patrons to our walk with Penrod. It was so nice seeing that our efforts were appreciated and very well received by so many people. All of the artists are getting great exposure at this event, and I so much appreciate showing my work alongside all of theirs. I hope you will all get a chance to see our tribute to Penrod, before the show ends on Mothers Day, May 9th.

As I was leaving the Show house today, I learned that one of Susan Mauck's works was purchased by a patron from Tennessee. What great news! Once the show is over, arrangements will be made for "News Boy Cap" to be delivered to his new home. A very good day indeed.

Vintage Walls

This old photo shows one of my vintage wall finishes. I first painted, then glazed the walls to a rich brown waxed paper bag finish. The next layer is a metallic old gold damask, with the final layer being an amber brown glaze to further age this vintage look. I love working with all of these layers, each one revealing a new surprise, adding to the story a bit with each one...what fun!

A Birds Nest

This painting will be leaving the nest tomorrow, going home with its new owner. I will miss it just as I always do, but it is going to such a good home that I cannot be too sad. It is a gift to learn that at times my art may speak to someone, and bring a bit of joy beyond my own paint brush. Thank you so much for remembering this painting Jen & John...

An Artist Swatch Book

This is the Artist Swatch book I designed for the Stutz Artists Association to send to architects and designers. My hope is that more of those in the trade will encourage their clients to buy original art. The Stutz has over 95 artists in 74 Studios, plus other Art related businesses in the buildings that used to manufacture the Stutz Bearcat.

The limited first run of this Book will be going out very soon to Indy's top professionals in the trade.

Twelve days of Show House Past: 2000 continued

As I was saying...I found an amazing surprise beneath the 25 year old wallpaper. An imprint from the original wall covering...Gasp! I knew immediately what I wanted to do about this, but that would require a change from my previously accepted design. I wanted very much to replicate the unearthed pattern on the walls, and I learned the original had been a red on red...lovely! My request was granted, but alas not in the cranberry reds..

After re-designing my area, the next task at hand was to find the whole pattern to reproduce. A little here and a little there, I was able to find enough of it to get all I needed to make a 4' x 5' template. The walls were painted a soft bay leaf green, I then painted the pattern in a translucent mossy green. Look at that iron railing!

It was so much fun to bring a bit of history back to this formal entry, that I almost forgot I was so high up on the scaffolding. Almost. The template was just about as tall as me, so it was quite a challenge to say the least, and sometimes quite comical. Its a tough job , but somebody's gotta do it :o)

Twelve days of Show House Past: 2000

In 2000 the Show House was back on Meridian Street at Historic Square, and my was the Entry in the Levy Mansion. I had received an invitation to sit on the Design Board, and enjoyed very much working alongside my fellow designers. There were two mansions that year, and so many details to be tended to.

The design I had submitted included a hand painted finish on the 2 story plus walls that led the eye up to this fabulous Tiffany stained glass sky light. Gasp! This beautiful work of art inspired me so much that I felt the need to be a part of the restoration of the surrounding area.

The walls were covered with 25 year old wallpaper. That needed to be removed. By me. On scaffolding. Did I ever mention how I really feel about scaffolding? Well, let's just say I really, really loved that Tiffany light.

As I was removing the old paper, something amazing started to happen. Even more amazing than me being on that slippery scaffolding...

My vision for the entry was to give an age appropriate feel and show that it is indeed possible to have multiple hand painted finishes in one area. The soft golden damask painted on the wall compliments the amber stain on the hardwood floor. The gold and silver leaf bench has a clear crazing and amber green glaze.

The archway motif is a reverse painting of the bordered ceiling. The chandelier was found in an antique shop, I located and added all of crystals. The candlesticks were dripped and painted.

Gold and silver leaf hall table is painted to compliment the bench, and a closer view of the wall finish.

The stair railing had been painted the flat wall color with a black hand railing. I chose a silver leaf and black finish to for an aged patina. I think this finish works especially well with the twists and curls of this iron railing. The back wall has an aged subtle natural setting mural.

Even the old lyon on the door could not escape my brush, finished now with a gold leaf clear crazing and then aged as well.

It was allot of fun trying to meet my self imposed challenge of painting every surface, and I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my favorite parts of this journey. It was very heartwarming today when a friend and talented artist mentioned that she still remembered seeing this room at Show House all those years ago.

To connect with someone through our own art is a feeling like no other...

Twelve days of Show House Past 1999

This is a before shot of the second year I worked on a home for St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House. I was awarded the Entry that year, and my design included a hand painted floor. Shown in this photo is the newly sanded floor, after the old carpet was removed. I then proceeded to measure and sketch the final drawing on the floor. Drawing the design with wood tone pencils took more than a week to complete.

Then it was time to paint.

And paint, and paint, and paint some more! I again had early access to complete the floor, then covered my work with plywood to protect it while I finished other details, and to allow others safe access through the entry. Am I giving too much of this process away? Tune in tomorrow a few more details on this area.

My plan was to paint every surface in the room...

The Back Staircase was much more labor intensive, and since I had both staircases on my to do list, I was allowed early access to complete my task. The Home Owner wanted a storybook castle theme for her grandchildren in this area, so of course I wanted to give it a try. I designed a friendly castle like theme, and the grandchildren were very happy. Gotta love happy children...

I so much wanted to write "The passage back from the place I was before" by this Trompe l'oeil doorway, but it was just not to be...this time :o) Thank you Eagles for the inspiration...

Below is the hand painted armoire' that you have seen before...this time in its intended setting, where it remains to this day.

Looking back there are several things I might add, as well as several things I would subtract, but in the time constraints of a show house, you have to know when to walk away from the work. Something I continue to learn every day. I will use my new ideas on another...as a good friend would say.

Top photo is a nice summer shot of the 2010 St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorator's Show House . As much as I would love to, I will show you no more of this beautiful historic home...you must come and see it for yourself when it opens April 24th. Instead, I will be pulling some photos from the archives to show some of the work that I have done on Show House' past.

The first year that I designed an area for St. Margaret's , was in the first of three Officers homes at Fort Benjamin Harrison shown that year. I did two (two?) three story staircases and landings....whew! What was I thinking? Oh, I remember, I was thinking it would be a great way to show two totally different ideas of decorative finishes in one home.

The front staircase featured a formal, very subtle textured five layer finish that took several days for myself and three helpers to complete, working around the clock...oh to be young again! Show House always has two staircases, and one of them must be open at all times. In this home I has scaffolding in both, hence the long hours on this finish. I have since done this finish in many colors, in many homes, so turns out to have been a good choice to showcase.

This is a photo of a built in china cupboard in the 1907 Federal style home's Kitchen. An aged cream clear crackle finish with green trim was chosen for this vintage cabinet. I was hired by the kitchen designer to finish this cabinet, after she saw the armoire I had done for the back staircase...

As our walk with Penrod draws near its end at St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House, we get a rare and wonderful glimpse of how an afternoon in Indiana may have looked to our beloved Penrod. The works I am sharing with you this evening were painted by Jerry Points, Fine Artist and gifted instructor. I remember the first time I saw one of Jerry's works, I realized that I had found an artist that loves trees just as much as I do. The way that Jerry paints trees and nature is an organic mixture of contemporary elegance.

The next work you will find along your walk with Penrod at the St. Margarets Hospital Guild's Decorator's Show House will be a small lithograph created by Artist Carol L. Myers. Carol's intuitive work "Explores the internal landscape of spirit" as she says, and I think that is the very best way to describe her work. This is but a tiny glimpse into the art that Carol creates in many different mediums. Fiber art, print making, watercolor, drawing and mixed media, to name just a few.

I especially love the trees that Carol creates in watercolor. I mention these in particular because I am a tree lover, and love to be mesmerized by tree art. Myers tree works really do honor nature, and take on a life all of their own, in their very own intimate way. I believe that Carol has found a way through her art to actually capture the essence of the birth of a tree. It is a magical and moving thing to see and feel.

Myers works daily form her studio at the Historic Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis, where she has just moved to a larger studio to accommodate her extensive body of works.

The next work you see along our path of all that is Penrod at the Show House will be one of Jim O'Neil's contemporary designs in Iron. Jim spent his early years in his fathers welding shop learning as he grew up. As an adult he studied design, and had an advertising and marketing firm for 25 years. His life and times have provided him with the inspiration needed to create works for many years to come. Though he is quite adept at drawing from so many years in the business, Jim is most satisfied with industrial design, Space planning and decorative iron work.

Jim says that : "Everything you see is a product of some facet of design. with varying degrees of beauty and efficiency. The design possibilities in the things that we observe become an addiction that needs to be satisfied"

As we continue our walk with Penrod at the Show House the next works you will see are thoughtfully created by Fine Artist Rita Spalding. I have long admired Rita's work, and I was quite pleased when I learned that she would create works especially for my design. Rita had been recently working on her Emily Dickinson Poetry Series, and her Penrod pieces are some what an extension of this vein of creativity. Her subtle work speaks volumes, always a nod towards all that nature brings but sometimes goes un-noticed. In Rita's work we cannot help but notice. Each one a joyful tribute to its very own subject. These are but a few of the examples of Rita's elegant works.

The next work you will see on your walk with Penrod at the St. Margaret's hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House is a beautiful portrait of "Young Penrod" painted by Fine Artist Susan Mauck. Susan describes her style as impressionistic with a contemporary edge. I believe that she can paint virtually anything that she wants, though her real passion is portrait work, and it shows.

Oil Study on Linen

Mauck loves capturing her Daughter Nikko, and Grandsons Gabe and Jessie, and she does so with passion and life. A close look into the eyes in her works tells you that she has captured the true spirit of her subject, and that is the common thread throughout all of her work. Her still life and landscape work is inspired, but Susan always finds that she returns quickly to the figure in her Sketching and Paintings, primarily oil on linen.

As promised, the first works you will see upon entering my design area at the Show House were created by exceptional Artist Harry Sandler, from New York. Harry also creates beautiful works in oils, though I must say I have never seen anyone use camera as brush quite the way he does. His thoughtful and evocative work is full of an emotional beauty that draws the viewer into his world. His high resolution work is nothing short of breathtaking and mere words cannot describe the paintings he can do on an Iphone...they are truly amazing.

The top image is "Where Are They" and the image below is "Birthday Party" from Sandler's Childhood and Other Neighborhoods Series. Both capture the innocent essence of childhood in a way that is all his own, and a trademark you will recognize throughout his body of work.

I am in awe of the works that these exceptional Artists have contributed to my vision for this area, and in the coming days I will be featuring some of their inspired works in an effort express my admiration and heartfelt gratitude. I feel quite fortunate to also refer to these Artists as my friends. Some of them I have known for years, and others I have gotten to know better just recently, and I would consider many of them kindred spirits. The Vestibule

Oh how I love painting on a curved ceiling, wall or almost anything really. It is such a challenge to do but I must say that it is just as much fun as well. This vestibule is attached to the entry that I posted yesterday, and was done at a show house many moon ago. I have had my head in the clouds on more than one occasion, and after finding these photos in the archives I am reminded just how pleasant it is to spend more than just a little time that way.

I see more clouds on my horizon, and it brings on a little smile just thinking about it...

A Cloudy Sky

A Lightly Painted Floor

A hand painted scroll on an old oak hardwood floor. Sanding first is a must so the design will soak into the raw wood. Once dry, apply several layers of a good topcoat, sanding between coats. This subtle design was painted on a 14' x 20' floor, borders the room and plays the part of a transparent rug.

I love layering details like this in design. Paying attention to scale and subtlety adds elegance to a formal setting, as well as a bit of formality to a casual setting. A person may not always know why they find a room comfortable and inviting. It is only important that they do...its all in how the details speak to each one of us.

Arts & Antiques Show 2010

Such a busy time! Photos here are of a booth that 10 of the Stutz Artists had last weekend at the Arts& Antiques Show. Long hours Wednesday thru Sunday, and many great contacts were made by all of the artists. Several of us are doing our own booths next year so we can display more of our own creations. It was a great Art Crowd. A big Thanks goes out to Debbie Parks for this fabulous opportunity.

On another note, all of the Art was hung at the Decorators' Show House, and I love how the area has turned out. A few glitches, sure but all in all a beautiful area to ponder and contemplate life's big questions...like will I get done with my work in time for photos?

Something I was working on very late Sunday evening...or was it early Monday morning? Kind of hard to tell with the time change, and having to do two weeks worth of projects in one week. I couldn't have done it without the help of several very good friends...heartfelt thanks to all that made this last week possible. Yay! More tomorrow...

A corner of progress...

This is a corner of my new design in progress, and has made its maiden voyage to the Show House...returning to the studio for a short rest before I continue my work. We were able to hang 19 of the 27 works of art today, and will continue in the morning until all are well placed.

Lots of wonderful comments from all, and I am very happy about seeing them all together, as they do collectively have a story to tell...even though each piece can tell a story of its own.

A couple of sketches lay upon a mirror I am working on for St. Margaret's Hospital Guild's Decorators' Show House Once I am happy with a design, I lay it out to try to get to know it a bit better before making a bigger commitment...then it's on to busting my glass.

As of now the mirror is 80% complete, and at a proper dryness to transport to the Show House for hanging tomorrow morning. Then its back to my studio for completion in time for an upcoming photo shoot. I am so excited that all of the art will be hung in my area tomorrow, the lighting goes in Wednesday, Liz Sinatra's furnishings will follow on Friday...whew! It was very inspiring to see all of these works go through the metamorphosis from concept to completion these past months. I can't wait to see them all in one room tomorrow! I predict some aha moments for the patrons of the Show House while taking a walk with Penrod at the Booth Tarkington home in my design area. More to come...

Vintage beads serve as robins eggs in this tiny wire nest brooch, from my BirdyBoo collection of adornments. I love these little hard to find antique beads. The birds were singing this week and we actually had a 48 degree day. Spring is on its way. Spring for me means getting ready for the impending photo shoot for St. Margarets Hospital Guilds Decorators' Show House, preparing for Stutz Annual Open House, and getting ready for the Arts and Antiques Show Throw in a late winter cold, a surprise interview, and organizing a new studio... Whew! I may not be able to post every day, but I will be checking in as often as possible. Staging a photo shoot

A photographer in the building is staging a "Vanity Fair" style photo shoot for the Artists at the Stutz as a promo for our annual open house in April. If you look closely, you just might recognize a few of the pieces. I am looking forward to seeing the final collage to see if I can still detect some of my work. I do not know the final count of Artists yet, but the photo had to be taken in four sections. The Artists usually hop on the antique fire engine for the group shot, which is pretty cool too. One of the only times we are all in one location at the same time. more on this later...

Sometimes its the never ending questions from others that helps us to learn a tiny bit about ourselves...

Ever After

It is always a happy day when one of my treasures finds a forever home, even if it is laced with a touch of bittersweet goodbyes. It is not an easy thing to let ones creations leave the nest...but still I have to smile when I think of many things that just seem to happen along the way.

This is an old photo of the Eastlake Armoire in its forever home. It was the Decorators' Show House, I was Designer and Artist the first year I was involved. I chose to use the Eastlake Armoire on the first floor landing. On top you can see dried hydrangea from The Seaport Florist in Brooklyn, and a selection of herbed vinegars from my garden. This house was the first of three Officers homes on Lawton Loop at Fort Benjamin Harrison and were on St. Margaret's tour that year.

These wonderful old homes were being offered to the public for the first time, and the current home owner had fallen in love with the armoire that I had rescued. I just knew it had found the right place to be. That year was a lot of hard work, and it was so much fun to be following my heart wherever it would would lead me. I designed and painted a pair of three story stairways and landings that year, and to my surprise received two awards for my efforts. Who knew?

Eastlake Armoire

This Eastlake Armoire is an old knock down wardrobe circa early 1900's, and was found at an auction in Centerville. The knock down was designed for the ease of moving a large piece of furniture at the beginning of last century. Wow, never thought I would ever say that. This one is made of oak and quite heavy. Having been stored in a barn for years rendered its original finish non existent. The hand carved beauty had been hidden away for quite possibly decades with layers of grime and neglect. What choice did I have but to bring it to the studio to begin its new life. After a week of scrubbing and sanding I chose a cream and leaf green crazed finish with translucent gold and vineyard grape juice purple accents. I love the detailing on the top, Eastlake has always been a favorite of mine. The rest of this story tomorrow...

Mango Study

I love the colors of a mango...love love love them. I tried to capture them in this little study last week. I still love the colors of the real mangos after attempting to capture them, so I will try again when the right ones come along. I plan to go back into this one and attempt to make more progress. I once painted an eight layer finish on dining room walls that looked like the center of the mango on the left...it was a yummy room, and just talking about it makes me want to paint another one of those too...

Black & Silver Bomb'e Chest

A little bombe chest from Belgium, brought to me by a good friend. This little chest had a very loose top and a badly damaged finish. I felt it was my duty to find a new life for this sad little guy...after all a tree had once been sacrificed for him and that is no small thing...to me. I chose a hand painted rubbed black finish with champaign silver detailing. It occurs to me now that the tiny stripes in the border are not clearly seen in this photo. I will take a detail shot of this to add later, because I think they are fun to do and see. I have allot of fun with these quaint little chests. Thanks for stopping by to see my work...

I have been working on promotion design for several upcoming events, some of them coming together nicely, others have yet to be started. When it rains it does seem to pour. A closer view of the Booth Tarkington home that is hosting this year's 2010 St. Margaret's Hospital Guild Decorators' Show House. I love this 1911 Tudor home and its history. It looks very different today, as it is covered with snow...I will try to get a photo of its winter beauty to show you as well.

My good news? I just learned that the current home owner loves the hand painted wall covering I created for her, and news like this makes me very happy...more tomorrow

I was not sure if I should post this... but I really could not help myself :o) A sneak peek of my hand painted wall covering at the Decorators' Show House. I have many things in the works for this area, and hope that you will enjoy this story as it unfolds.

Tomorrow I will start work in earnest on my Pique Assiette mirror and table for the wall you see on the left, in the top photo. The bottom photo is detail of the subtle pattern I have painted for four of the walls. My intention is to give a bit of interest, but not so much as to take away from the art that has been created for the covered walls. The remaining walls have a pale buttery hue that will allow the art work hung upon them to sing their song as well. My hope is to depict various ways to add design elements and interest that provoke a pleasurable pause in a seemingly ordinary area.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy the process of bringing the elements of a design together for the DSH. I am so grateful to be a part of this project again. I am also very grateful for all of my talented Artists, for all of the work they are putting into this project on behalf of their belief in me. I am really quite humbled by it all...

Decorators' Show House progress

My hand painted wall fabric is finished...yay for me! In the top photo you can see the strips have been rolled up and numbered for delivery to my installers. I gathered these buttery bits of goodness and delivered them to the Booth Tarkington house in the morning snow. This fabric will be the background for 20 of the 27 works of art that are being created by a selection of exceptionally talented Artists. I've been so fortunate to have had a birds eye view as these Artists work through their creative process, making a contribution to my vision for this project. The name of my ares is "A Walk With Penrod Schofield" and the artists have all put their individual stamp on what this means to them personally. I am very proud of each and every one of them, and look very much forward to getting all of these great works together in one room. It is my hope to add just one more artist, if she agrees...fingers crossed. Penrod was written by Booth Tarkington, and is the inspiration for my area in this show house. Indianapolis also has the Penrod Art Fair every September at the IMA. the bottom photo is a reminder of the unembellished painted buttery strips. Can't wait to see the walls tomorrow...

I love the balance of color and gold on this pique assiette heart, and will always have an eye out for just one more chipped or cracked plate in this pattern. The combination of pinks, green, a touch of blue and gold are quite beautiful to me. I think this is a good example of less is more, a little vintage stained glass and a few crystals complete the design. Lucky number 13 for today, could that mean 13 hugs?

Speaking of lucky numbers, I learned recently that my design area at the St Margaret's Hospital Guild Show House is also now number 13. This was determined once the path through the house had been decided upon by the Guild. Below is a little tease, a before photo of the area. This was taken from the sun room. My area includes the landing, upstairs sitting area and long hallway...which will be transformed into a gallery featuring the works of six extremely exceptional artists. Oh, and some of my work will be there too :o) In this photo, you can see that we have already installed picture moulding, and the white wall on the left has been smoothed with plaster to prepare it for my hand painted wall covering. More to come on this project.

A little Pique Assiette heart with vintage china from one of my favorite finds. I love these delicate pink flowers combined with pearly pink glass, crystals and a tiny rhinestone. This little heart has also in its possession the enhancement of charms, adding so much interest to the little unbroken heart. Friends are like the charms that we add one by one to our lives when we least expect to do so, the little gifts we give to ourselves. Its kinda like finding a flower in that unexpected place...maybe it actually found you.

A pale yellow pique assiette heart surrounded with crystals. This heavy vintage plate came to me with a very large crack half way through its pink and yellow roses, it nearly fell apart in my hands. The crazing beneath the glaze made it very difficult to keep the delicate roses somewhat in tact. I love the way the crystals reflect a bit of the yellow rose. I felt it needed no more than to just be.

A friend came by the studio today and chose a little heart to call her very own...and another friend came by just to give me a big hug. What a nice day! I also spent a few hours sorting vintage china by color and getting some of my books on shelves from my move. It was just one of those snowy winter days in the studio. hmmm

I have some exciting news about my little hearts. A few days ago I mentioned that I sent two of my favorite little hearts to a Hands For Haiti - Doctors Without Borders charity auction. I learned today that my hearts went for a total bid of $500.00 for this worthy cause...leaving me nearly speechless! Nearly...I am so happy to have been able to help, and want to thank the generous bidders for reaching so deeply to contribute to this worthy cause. I also have a bit of sad news. A very good friend of mine found the end of her journey late Saturday evening. I had rescued this silky pup six years ago, but as it turns out, it was she that had rescued me. Unconditional love from a wagging wonder is a healing thing indeed, and can sometime arrive when we least expect it...be it a person or a pet it matters not. I feel lucky that she found me, and I will miss her very deeply. She was 14 and sweet and simple and beautiful. Rest in peace puppy...

This little Pique Assiette heart has a double row of crystals, two tiny rhinestones and several broken bits of a beautiful antique plate. The necklace is strung with silver glass seed beads and some of my favorite candy pink antique beads. A very long strand that can be worn long, doubled, or as a lariat.

Tonight was the opening of "Art From The Fourth Chakra", and a few brave souls ventured out into the winter storm to see the offerings that the Stutz Artists made in honor of the occasion. The Gallery closed a bit early, and after watching the snow fall softly all day long, it was finally time for all to find their way into a wintery wonderland. I cannot remember a time when the snow coated the leafless trees so perfectly. Did I ever mention that I love snow, I dearly love snow. My magical silent ride home was full of thoughts of friends that I know in my heart could artfully capture the wonderment unfolding before my eyes with each passing tunnel of snow laden trees. Upon arriving home, I bundled up for a silent walk in the stillness of the evening. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and tonight I found myself wishing that I had the skills to capture this beautiful peaceful moment in time. It is still snowing...

Love this moment...make snow angels...have some cocoa...hug a friend.

A charmed heart is what I have decided upon today for the fourth day of February. A rosebud is the focal on this little heart, keeping it company are bits of vintage stained glass, a tiny pink rhinestone , crystals and a shard or two from of my favorite antique plates. I have added a candy pink vintage bead and a clear glass heart. Sterling charms finish this little key to my heart Pique Assiette pendant.

This is one of my favorite little hearts, and maybe the one that pulls at my heartstrings the most. That is why I had to let it go in hopes that it might pull at the heartstrings of its future owner. I sent this heart to a performance and charity auction that will be taking place this weekend in LA, and proceeds will benefit Hands For Haiti and Dr's Without Borders. Talented artists are coming together to do what they can to help those who need our love and help now more than ever...Children. I sent these hearts out like little hugs on their way to a greater good. It is my hope that they will complete their journey and help where help is needed the most. Todays offering, Pink rhinestones, crystals, vintage china and stained glass, a little Pique Assiette heart on this 3rd day in February, a special day in my heart. I must admit at times I am bursting at the seams with memories of a dear friend's compassion and the love bestowed there within. Sometimes friends are relatives, more often not, but that does not make the memories any less sweet...I am very thankful for the treasured friendships that I have had the good fortune to have in my life and times.

I am working late at the studio this evening, on my entry for the "Art From The Fourth Chakra" exhibition that is on Friday evening, and remembered I had not yet chatted with you today. Speaking of dreams, Leap Year was a good movie...the kind that takes one to beautiful places otherwise left unseen.
