The call came in for a make over on a fireplace in a home that has a european old world aesthetic. Unfortunately, the granite salesman sold a contemporary-ish idea to my trusting client. So many things could have been done with the stone to accomplish the desired result...alas!
My first thought was to start over...this idea did not go over very well needless to say. The next thought was to add the corbels to anchor the floating mantle. The hand painted limestone finish on the corbels and mantle gives a more believable look. Next step was to glaze all existing stone to neutralize the impact of the keystone, and darken the arch to give visual height to the low firebox.
It must have been fireplace repair week...
